Day 12 : Visit to Melk Abbey & Danube River cruise

Our journey continued with one of the most anticipated highlights: a visit to the breathtaking Melk Abbey, perched dramatically atop a rocky outcrop overlooking the Danube. As we approached, the abbey's golden Baroque facade gleamed under the late morning sun, its twin towers and vast orange-roofed complex dominating the skyline above the quaint town of Melk below.

Stepping inside felt like entering a masterpiece of 18th-century Baroque splendor. We wandered through the grand Imperial Staircase, admired the opulent Marble Hall with its frescoed ceilings, and marveled at the world-famous library—home to ancient manuscripts and gilded tomes stretching toward an astonishing ceiling fresco. The abbey church itself was a feast for the senses, with swirling stucco, gold leaf, and intricate marble details that seemed to reach toward the heavens. From the balconies and terraces, the panoramic views over the Danube and the rolling Wachau Valley were simply unforgettable. A peaceful stroll through the abbey gardens, with their manicured hedges and pavilion, offered a moment of calm reflection amid such grandeur.

After soaking in the abbey's beauty, we made our way down to the riverbank and boarded our cruise ship for the scenic voyage along the Danube through the heart of the Wachau Valley—a UNESCO World Heritage gem. The river carried us gently downstream, past terraced vineyards clinging to steep hillsides, apricot orchards, and charming medieval villages with colorful rooftops and church spires.

The landscape unfolded like a living painting: ruined castles perched on hilltops, sleepy hamlets like Dürnstein and Spitz gliding by, and the ever-present green hills framing the wide, shimmering river. The breeze was fresh, the sun warm, and the pace blissfully unhurried—perfect for sipping a local wine or simply watching Austria's most picturesque stretch of the Danube slip past.

As the afternoon deepened, the skyline slowly transformed. The hills gave way to broader views, and soon the unmistakable outlines of Vienna appeared on the horizon—bridges arching over the water, modern towers mingling with historic domes, and the promise of imperial grandeur ahead.

Disembarking in the lovely city of Vienna felt like the perfect culmination of the day's magic. The Danube had delivered us straight into the heart of one of Europe's most elegant capitals, ready for whatever adventures awaited in its streets, palaces, and coffeehouses. What a glorious transition—from serene abbey heights to the vibrant pulse of Vienna!

Our late afternoon city tour of Vienna served as the perfect gentle introduction to the imperial grandeur and musical soul of this elegant capital. As the golden light of the waning day bathed the city's historic streets, you caught glimpses of what makes Vienna so captivating—setting the stage beautifully for the full-day adventure that awaited the next morning.

Highlights along this route often include the Vienna State Opera (Staatsoper), an architectural jewel where legends like Mozart and Strauss once echoed; the neo-Gothic Rathaus (City Hall) and the Parliament Building, both glowing softly in the late light; and the sprawling Hofburg Palace, the former winter residence of the Habsburgs. Even a quick peek into the Hofburg complex—home to the Imperial Apartments, the Spanish Riding School, and the stunning National Library—revealed layers of royal history and Baroque splendor.

The afternoon exploration ended at the iconic St. Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansdom) with its colorful tiled roof and towering spire. This Gothic masterpiece, a symbol of Vienna for centuries, offered a moment to marvel at its intricate details—perhaps even climbing the South Tower for sweeping views over the rooftops as the afternoon unfolded.

Before we returned to our hotel, we also joined a short evening session of brass instrument music performance at a nearby church located in the city centre.

ABOUT US

For us, Patrick coming from Hong Kong with our 13-year-old twins (Bobby & Betsy, American Born Chinese roots), this social side is extra special. The predominantly American group gives our kids natural exposure to U.S. family vibes. It's gentle, fun cultural bridging: they make friends, pick up slang, laugh at the same silly things, and get a taste of Stateside living culture ahead of any future return.

And the people ?  That's where the real spark happens. Rick Steves attracts a crowd of like-minded travelers—curious, down-to-earth Americans (often families, couples, or multi-gen groups) who value thoughtful, authentic experiences over glitz. Small groups (usually 24–28 max) mean real conversations form fast: shared bus rides turn into storytelling sessions, group dinners become lively cross-table chats, and free time adventures create instant bonds. Tourmates just get it—they're there for the same reasons you are.

Whether it's the thoughtful pacing that keeps everyone happy, the hassle-free logistics that let us focus on joy instead of stress, or the welcoming crowd that turns strangers into friends, Rick Steves tours deliver the kind of family travel we crave: enriching, relaxing, and full of heart.

They also arranged a bigger room for the three of us, hence no need for single room supplement, and it allows the parents to stay with their young kids in the same room !!

One more thing : all tips are included in the Tour price, and we don't have to carry too much cash !!!
