Day 2 : Excursion to Burg Eltz & Beilstein

The magic of the Moselle Valley unfolded early in the trip with one of the most anticipated highlights: a morning excursion to the legendary Burg Eltz, a fairy-tale castle that looks like it stepped straight out of a storybook.

Nestled deep in a lush, forested valley, untouched by wars or modernization for over 850 years, Burg Eltz rises dramatically from its rocky perch, surrounded by dense green woods and the gentle Eltz stream far below. Its cluster of turrets, half-timbered towers, and golden stone walls gleam under the morning light, making every approach feel like entering an enchanted realm.

The group wound up the winding forest path, anticipation building with every step, until the full splendor of the castle came into view—towers piercing the sky, ivy clinging to ancient walls, and panoramic vistas of the untouched Rhineland-Palatinate countryside. Inside, time stood still: grand halls lined with armor and tapestries, a treasury glittering with medieval treasures, family portraits gazing down from centuries past, and secret corners whispering tales of knights and nobility. Exploring room after room felt like flipping through the pages of a living history book, with the group's shared wonder making every discovery even more special.

Before heading out, everyone gathered for a classic group photo on the castle's battlements—smiles wide, arms around shoulders, the majestic Burg Eltz towering proudly behind as the perfect backdrop. A snapshot to treasure, capturing that electric moment when strangers become travel companions on an unforgettable journey.

Lunch awaited at a scenic spot overlooking the river—tables set on a terrace where the gentle flow of the Moselle provided the soundtrack, steep vineyards climbing the opposite bank, and boats drifting lazily past. What a way to kick the adventure into high gear—ancient castles, storybook villages, river vistas, and great company. The Moselle Valley is delivering postcard perfection, and with so much more ahead, the best chapters are still unwritten.

We made a brief tour of Beilstein, before getting on board our Coach.

ABOUT US

For us, Patrick coming from Hong Kong with our 13-year-old twins (Bobby & Betsy, American Born Chinese roots), this social side is extra special. The predominantly American group gives our kids natural exposure to U.S. family vibes. It's gentle, fun cultural bridging: they make friends, pick up slang, laugh at the same silly things, and get a taste of Stateside living culture ahead of any future return.

And the people ?  That's where the real spark happens. Rick Steves attracts a crowd of like-minded travelers—curious, down-to-earth Americans (often families, couples, or multi-gen groups) who value thoughtful, authentic experiences over glitz. Small groups (usually 24–28 max) mean real conversations form fast: shared bus rides turn into storytelling sessions, group dinners become lively cross-table chats, and free time adventures create instant bonds. Tourmates just get it—they're there for the same reasons you are.

Whether it's the thoughtful pacing that keeps everyone happy, the hassle-free logistics that let us focus on joy instead of stress, or the welcoming crowd that turns strangers into friends, Rick Steves tours deliver the kind of family travel we crave: enriching, relaxing, and full of heart.

They also arranged a bigger room for the three of us, hence no need for single room supplement, and it allows the parents to stay with their young kids in the same room !!

One more thing : all tips are included in the Tour price, and we don't have to carry too much cash !!!
